Native to Michigan, the bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa) is one of the most massive oaks with a trunk diameter of up to 3 m (10 ft), and can live up to 400 years, making it a classic choice for large properties where generations will enjoy its timeless beauty. Among the white oaks, it is one of the most tolerant of urban conditions, and is one of the fastest-growing of the group.

A favorite of wildlife including bears, deer, turkeys, and porcupine, bur oak produces the largest acorns of all oaks, and they are wrapped in an interesting wooly cap. The acorns are edible to humans. The bur oak is the only known foodplant of Bucculatrix recognita caterpillars.

It’s bark is grey with distinctive vertical ridges and it’s leaves Offers dense shade. Is a long-lived tree. Tolerates pollution and heat stress. Sun Preference: Full Sun. Soil Preference: Acidic, Alkaline, Clay, Drought, Loamy, Sandy, Well Drained, Wet. Mature Height: 70' - 80' - Do not plant under power lines.
