Sugar Maple

The sugar maple (Acer saccharum) is one of Michigan’s most-loved native trees, but is experiencing decline as it is displaced by invasive Norway maples. One of sugar maple’s most prominent features is amazing fall color. As the seasons change, the leaves turn vibrant shades of yellow, burnt orange, and red. Provides great shade because of a dense crown.
Sap has the highest sugar content of all maples, giving it its name and making it the primary source of maple syrup. The seeds can be roasted and eaten by humans. Whitetail deer and rabbits browse on the buds and twigs of maples. Attracts game birds, game mammals, Insect pollinators, small mammals, songbirds
Sun Preference: Full Sun, Partial Sun/Shade. Soil Preference: Acidic, Alkaline, Drought, Well Drained. Mature Height: 60' - 75' Mature Spread: 40' - 50' Do not plant under powerlines.
