11am - 3pm Hear presentations about manure management, compost, and livestock mortality disposal from MDARD and MSUE specialists, concluding with a tour of Twelve Oaks Farm dairy. Compost: In this presentation, we will discuss the ins and outs of composting related to how it is made and its benefits, appropriate storage options, the transfer and land application of compost, and what Right to Farm coverage exists with on-farm compost production. Manure: Learn about basic guidelines on spreading and storing manure safely to prevent run-off and protect surface water. Livestock Mortality Disposal: Bodies of Dead Animals (BODA) have strict rules on proper livestock mortality disposal. Learn about different methods of disposal and how to prevent disease and risk to water and soil quality. Lunch will be provided. Speakers
Erica Rogers is an Inspector for the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Right to Farm program. Erica obtained a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from Michigan State University and a Master of Science in Animal Science from Penn State University. Erica’s areas of interest and expertise include manure, nutrient, odor, and mortality management as well as water quality. Erica hails from West Michigan and enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband and beautiful daughter.
Shelby Burlew is a MAEAP Verifier and enjoys working with technicians and meeting farmers across the very agriculturally diverse region of Southeast Michigan. She grew up in Branch County where she was very active in 4-H and the National FFA organization. Shelby received her Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from Michigan State University and her Master of Science in Agricultural Sciences, with a specialization in Integrated Resource Management, from Colorado State University. Prior to joining MDARD and MAEAP in 2018, Shelby spent three years as a MAEAP technician and then four and a half years as a MSU Extension Educator.
